Earlier this month I stated that I was going to begin reading more books. I began a tactic I was familiar with called D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read). Not sure if any of you picked up on the habit as well—but what if you added maybe…a wine to pair with the mood of the book? (Did your eyes shift or did they roll?)

Cool—here are a few books paired with the perfect wine to set the mood.

So grab your wine glass and pick up:

The Complete Fiction of Nella Larsen by Nella Larsen

The Wine: Syrah (Shiraz)

A full-bodied intense sweet red is the perfect pairing as Nella Larsen takes you on the journeys of Passing—a light skin black woman who spent years passing for white and now faces tragic consequences and Quicksand—kind of a semi-biography of Nella, herself, a mulatto woman who struggles with finding her sense of identity and fitting in.

Did I mention that Passing will soon be a movie starring Tessa Thompson?—I just did.

The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir by Jenifer Lewis

The Wine: Zinfandel

A light-bodied red wine with a high acidity that makes it taste bold—is what’s needed as you read about this Mega-Diva’s journey from the mid-west to Hollywood. You’ll probably complete the book—and bottle as you dive more into a woman who has achieved success in movies, television, comedy and theater.

I’m Judging You by Luvvie Ajayi

The Wine: Prosecco

A subtle and bubbly all occasion wine pairs well with this collection of political commentary that digs into real issues— in a humorous yet informative way, on all the shit wrong with American society.

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

The Wine: Sauvignon Blanc

An aggressive dry white is what’s needed for this very informative book that uses personal experiences and facts to spark conversations about race—and what we have to deal with daily while coexisting in majority white environments.
